Suspected killer is caught after a nearly three-hour search
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS 12) —
An alleged killer is off the street.
Port St. Lucie Police say Justino Cruz, Jr., 36, of Port St.Lucie stabbed his father to death.
For nearly three hours Tuesday night, he was on the loose, on the run.
But police caught him with help from the public.
“We were able to take him into custody without any injuries or anything. He gave up,” said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, Port St. Lucie Police.
Police arrested Justino Cruz Jr. thanks to a tip from a concerned citizen, a woman who said she spotted him near the Publix on the Crosstown Parkway west of I-95 in Port St. Lucie a few minutes after 7 Tuesday night.
Police found Cruz walking along Crosstown Parkway.
“He turned around, took his hat off and the officer recognized that it was him,” Sabol said.
Police say Cruz called 911 around 4:30 saying he had just killed his father.
Police found Cruz’s father, Justino Cruz, 65, on the floor in his first-floor apartment at The Club at St. Lucie West in a bedroom with multiple stab wounds.
“It’s crazy the things that are going on in the world. You just wonder what’s going on in peoples’ minds,” said Marcy Farina, a neighbor.
“I kinda figured something like this would happen. Yeah, he’s pretty crazy. Pretty weird,” said Lorenzo Campbell, another neighbor.
“It is a little scary, it is a little scary. I pay extra rent to be in a gated community,” said Catherine Constantine, another neighbor.
Port St. Lucie Police have not said so far what the motive was for the killing.
Cruz, Jr. is expected to appear in court Wednesday, charged with murder.
Detectives say Cruz, Jr. was reported missing by his father about two months ago. He was found safe in North Carolina.
