Police: Father of rescued children arrested in connection to apartment fire
RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —
Police have made an arrest in connection to an apartment fire at Stonybrook Apartments, on Friday.
Riviera Beach Police have charged Velmando Williams, 22, with attempted murder, false imprisonment, simple domestic battery, and first degree arson.
According to police, at 5:43 p.m. they received a call reporting a domestic dispute, and additional calls reporting a structure fire at the same location
As officers arrived they made contact with people who advised them there were three young children inside the apartment. The children were successfully rescued by Riviera Beach Fire Rescue.
Police say witnesses on the scene, including the three young children's mother, said Williams set the apartment on fire as a result of an argument the two had.
Police brought Williams in for questioning, and determined he intentionally set the fire.
According to police, Williams was transported to the Palm Beach County Jail.
Williams refused to make first appearance Saturday morning.
Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters says families affected by the fire can pick up school uniforms from Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune Elementary School until 2 p.m.
