More than 16,000 people in shelters in Sarasota County

SARASOTA, Fla. (CBS12) — The second landfall for Irma is expected to be near Sarasota. Heavy rains have already begun.

The eye of the storm will reach Sarasota during the overnight hours. The causeway has been closed as have many of the bridges in the area.

More than 16,000 people are in shelters in the county.

On the other side of the state, CBS12 reporter Thomas Forester captured the ongoing flooding in Fort Pierce.

High winds were also evident in Lake Worth.
