Man accused of 'play fighting' with 2-year-old girl
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —
A man is accused of play fighting with a 2-year-old girl and sending her to the hospital with severe injuries.
Police responded to the emergency room on May 5 to speak to the girl's relative. She told investigators she found the girl with a black eye and a huge welt on her head. Doctors also found bruises on the girl's back and pattern burns on her feet and armpit, according to the police report.
The girl ended up having surgery in the intensive care unit at St. Mary's Medical Center. She needed surgery for a lacerated kidney and bruises to her pancreas, liver and colon.
According to West Palm Beach Police, the woman said the girl was being watched by Timothy Tatum Jr. The 20-year-old told West Palm Beach he accidentally hit the girl in the face while they were play fighting. He said he didn't cause the welt on the girl's head. He said the toddler's 1-year-old relative pushed her off the couch and she hit her head on a coffee table.
Tatum's story didn't hold up to an expert with the Child Protection Team. Dr. William Rosenstein said the girl's injuries could not have come from play fighting. According to police, Rosenstein determined the burn injuries came from a cigarette lighter, and the other injuries were the result of blunt force trauma.
Police arrested Tatum on a charge of aggravated child abuse. He appeared in court on Saturday. He is free on a $10,000 bond.
