Bridge closes temporarily after partial collapse
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS 12) —
A busy bridge where a section collapsed last week will close Friday night.
At 6:00 pm, cars, trucks and people will not be allowed over the US 1 bridge in North Palm Beach.
The closure, which is expected to last until 6 am Monday is blamed on the sudden collapse of a sidewalk section after a rusty tension wire broke.
CBS12 Investigates learned crews will now remove the remaining sidewalk sections over fears that the same thing could happen again.
Drone shots from Sky Team 12 show you exclusive video of the damage and the missing 40-foot, 90,000-pound section of bridge that rests in the river below.
The executive chef at nearby Frigates tells CBS12 that the collapse and traffic have already impacted business.
“It’s access, it’s all down to one lane, heading south, so it’s tough to get here,” Keith Vaughn said.
The bridge closure this weekend could be another blow to the bottom line, but Keith is keeping optimistic, despite the fact that the bridge is also closed to marine traffic.
“Any impediment is never good for business, whether it’s rain or a broken bridge, but they’ll get here,” he said.
The plan is to remove the sidewalks and more barriers will be installed.
Emergency vehicles will be allowed to use the bridge if necessary.
