BBB issues alert during health insurance open enrollment
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —
An important warning to protect yourself from having your personal information end up in the wrong hands.
The Better Business Bureau serving Southeast Florida and the Caribbean is reporting a rise in complaints against several different health insurance companies out of South Florida.
With open enrollment now underway, the bureau is seeing an increase in the number of consumers receiving unsolicited calls about their health insurance plans, even after the opt-out date and in some cases, when they haven’t even opted in.
Some of the companies with reported complaints include, Simple Health Plans Inc., Affordable Healthcare 123 and the Sunshine Health State Plan.
Cinthya Lavin, the Director of Communications with the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida, says right now it’s only been questions and complaints from consumers, no victims of any wrong-doing.
They do worry though with it being open enrollment season right now, potential scammers could see this as an opportunity to get personal information from consumers.
The best way to protect yourself against becoming a victim of a scam is to always do your research before giving away any information, especially over the phone.
The Better Business Bureau also has an online scam tracker that allows you to report and track suspicious activity reported about businesses; county by county.
