Ft Pierce rally urging for more 'no-kill' shelters, communities

FT. PIERCE, Fla. -- Thousands of animals put to sleep in our shelters every year. Tonight, a new movement is underway. The no-kill movement putting political pressure on lawmakers who they claim are harming animals with their inaction.

Protestors are asking for just one day, one day where animals aren't euthanized, in a region that does about 8,000 euthanizations a year.

What if all shelters were no kill shelters? That is the rally cry Monday in Ft. Pierce.

Pamela Anderson/ Boardmember, St. Lucie County Humane Society: I just cant imagine anyone not supporting a no-kill community. I'm with the Humane Society and it's something we have longed to be for many, many years and its going to take a community effort and local government to get there.

Treasure Coast humane societies combined, spend more than $6.5 million to take care of more than 18,000 animals a year, almost 40-percent are euthanised.

Linda Richter from Indian River County's only no-kill shelter, Halo Rescue, is here to rally to support stronger laws for animal breeding and treatment of feral animals.

Linda Richter/ Halo Rescue of IRC: We do not have a TNR--trap neuter return policy, which would save so many lives, if we could get that through the legislature. Then all of these cats do not go into the humane society where they are pretty much automatically killed.

Supporters want a no-kill advocacy community here. But other states who've embraced the no-kill philosophy have to fund it. That means comprehensive adoption programs, low-cost pet medical access and funding, and mandatory spay and neuter laws.

Pamela Anderson/ Boardmember, St. Lucie County Humane Society:  We have to become a mandatory spay-neuter county we have to. We cant adopt our way out of it. We cant euthanize our way out of it. It has to be humane spay neuter, mandatory spay neuter to make people stop the breeding.

So far every law mandating a spay neuter policy in St. Lucie County or any county on the Treasure Coast has been knocked down by the legislature.

Today's no-kill rally organizers say this is just the beginning, they plan to put pressure on legislators and local leaders to help control the pet population.
