Rolex theft suspect taken into custody
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --
It didn't take long for police to find a man caught on crystal-clear
video stealing a $6,500 watch at a TSA security checkpoint at Ft.
Lauderdale airport. When asked where he got the watch, he told police it
was a "gift from god."
Detectives this week released video of the man taking about 6 seconds to
spot and decide to pocket a Rolex belonging to a woman who went through
security a few seconds ahead of him on Jan. 18. She realized she'd left
the watch in a bin about 30 minutes after the suspect had already
high-tailed it for a flight to New York. By then it was already too
late.
Broward Sheriff's Office detectives continued scouring airport video to
track down the suspect, finally confirming his identity as Igor Adrian
Ramos, 37, of 400 Kings Point Drive in Sunny Isles north of Miami.
Police say he also owns a home on Long Island, N.Y.
U.S. marshals paid a visit to his address on Long Island but no one was
home Friday morning. Shortly after, BSO detectives went to his Sunny
Isles condo and heard voices inside. Ramos opened the door after police
knocked, and he was wearing the watch on his wrist, police said.
When asked where he got the watch, he told police "it was a gift from
god," according to Brian Montgomery with the airport police.
Ramos was arrested without incident on a grand theft charge. Detectives
said he travels between Florida and New York, buying and selling cars.
He was preparing to head back to New York when deputies knocked on his
door.
Police say Ramos had no idea the video of him stealing the watch was seen all over the country.
Police say the victim is "very happy" tp hear a suspect was arrested and the watch retrieved.
