FAU's new budget reality: Crunch and chop

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Budget cuts at Florida Atlantic University. For weeks teachers and faculty have protested after they found out FAU needed to cut $24.7 million. Those cuts will include satellite campuses, and some summer classes. Monday FAU's Senior VP of Finance laid out what would be chopped.

The forum first kicking off with the Vice President of FAU's Finance Department Dennis Crudele, revealing the budget numbers.

"We've gone from $181 million to $92 million and you can't take that kind of reduction without having to really look at and assess your core values," said Crudele.

After that, going over the budget plan that if approved, would eliminate campuses in Port St. Lucie and Fort Lauderdale.

"We did take a look at the number of students that were serving in those other campuses so it wasn't just a decision that we took lightly."

And then came the questions and comments, pouring in via conference call, faculty and students from those branch campuses upset and wanting answers. Another concern voiced among faculty and students, of all the budget cuts to come, the administration's not broken down for all to se,e leaving some curious.

"The president has a house and a car and makes so and so millions of dollars. Where's her cut?" said Monique Paramore.

Paramore is one of the more vocal FAU students at the forum today, delayed from graduating a year because of course cuts and will have to find work earlier.

"If I have to stay here longer, I have to to spend more money which means I have to get a job," said Paramore.

FAU's proposed budget cuts not set in stone just yet. They still have to be approved by FAU's board of trustees. That decision not coming until June.
