Consumer Alerts: Senior pods

A new trend is taking hold in Florida. It's an alternative to assisted living facilities.

A retired Colonel, Kenneth George, served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. But now, approaching 91, Kathy Barker wants what's best for her father.

"The biggest thing that happened to him was the loss of the ability to drive," Baker said.

He did not want to go to an assisted living facility, so Kathy discovered a new alternative: a low cost, custom built home that would fit right into her own backyard, called a senior cottage.

Home-builder Henry Moseley spent years concentrating on much larger projects but started building these smaller back yard homes after seeing the demand.

"They're quiet, they're comfortable, they're energy efficient and they're spacious," Moseley said. "They have the small kitchen, they have the sitting room, they have a nice bedroom. It's everything a parent needs."

An assisted living facility can cost up to $50,000 a year.

The senior pods run from $50 to $100, and you own them.

They are being built around Tampa and Orlando but have not caught on yet in our area.
